Any oil that comes into contact with the skin is absorbed by the skin and passes through the capillaries into the bloodstream. Since a baby’s skin is still developing and absorbs more easily than an adult’s, it is important to choose the oil that is best suited to the baby’s skin.
Oils for Baby Massage
When choosing oils, choose cold-pressed or extrusion-pressed oils. They last longer and have a more organic character. Do not store oils in warm places or under sunlight. The best way to preserve oils is to store them in a cool, dark place. Before using stored oils, always smell them. You can also taste the oil if necessary. Spoiled or rotten oils will have an unpleasant smell and a bitter taste. If you are unsure of the quality of the oil, discard it. It is always best to play it safe when using oils for baby massage.
●What is cold pressing?
Cold pressing is a method of extracting oils without changing the chemical composition of the oil molecules. Heat extraction methods chemically alter the molecular structure of oils, sometimes producing toxic substances.
●About petroleum-derived oils
Petroleum-derived oils are odorless, tasteless, and slimy substances that remain after the volatile components of petroleum have been evaporated. This pure substance is in a yellowish semi-solid state and is known as petroleum jelly. It is also sometimes called “Vaseline”.
Petroleum-derived oils are also called mineral oils. Generally, this mineral oil is mixed with aromatic oils to produce commercial baby oils. Mineral oils are produced as a by-product in the distillation process of petroleum to obtain gasoline. Mineral oils are not easily absorbed by the skin and are not suitable for consumption. They are less valuable and are mass-produced than vegetable oils.
Mineral oils are petroleum-based pollutants. They have adverse effects on hormones, impede skin respiration, and impair the skin’s immune system. It also slows down cell renewal and is the second leading cause of aging (after sunlight). In fact, there are cases where sunscreens made from mineral oils have been linked to skin, colon, and breast cancer.
